It seems as if modern human labor and behavior has become automatically controlled such as the operation of an apparatus, a process, or system by mechanical or electronic devices that replace not only human labor but also the human spirit. The irony of the term resides in that the original word given by the ancient Greeks to describe automates or automated means “spontaneous”, which evolved and adapted to our current mass production reality to signify something that precisely lacks this spontaneous nature. The Automat at times feels sequestered by its environment, by the system, by its work and sequestered by its duties and obligations to society which more than personal decision consciously thought off and acted upon, were gently suggested and forced upon him. In this sense the Automat is constantly and gradually deprived of its dreams and illusions (that at one point he did have) which are substituted with those of its subconscious which itself has been patiently trained and indoctrinated throughout his life to accept and fulfill its destiny.
