Artist Sid Campbell’s Art and the Literary World: Over the past 20 years artist Sid Campbell has written over 50 books on various aspects of the Asian martial arts. Recently, he merged his love of art with his passion for writing. His passion for Hawai’iana and traditional Japanese ancient weapons lore are reflected in the original artwork found on this online art gallery. Historic Significance of Sid Campbell’s Fine Art: Artist Sid Campbell’s knowledge of Asian, Polynesian and South Seas martial arts are reflected in virtually every piece of his original work. As the artist likes to say, “Every picture tells a story and if you know the history behind the art, you appreciate the art even more.” Whether it is the Battle of Tennozan (Toyotomi’s Attack ©2005 Sid Campbell) or (The Last Visit to Makahiki ©2005 Sid Campbell) Campbell takes slices right out of Hawai’ian, Japanese and Ryukyuan Kingdom history and paints relevant pieces of art from these ancient times. In Kiss of the Dragon Princess ©2006 Sid Campbell) he captures the spirit and beauty of a female samurai poised ready to defend against all invaders. Though Campbell’s works are definitely fine art in quality and detail, his bold and vivid colors give them a distinctive contemporary look. Naturally, one must realize that before the artist begins work on a new painting he researches the time, date, era, events and historical significance of that time or era. And, since many of his literary works are based on decades of research in the field of martial arts this is not as difficult as it may seem. However, to paint of ancient times using contemporary art style and technique requires a good working knowledge of the dress, weapons, fighting methodologies and the setting in general to do such a work justice. One should know that the essence and subject matter are---for the most part—historically correct and authentic to the time ad era. Of course in some of Sid Campbell’s fine art he has taken some liberties (creative licenses) to paint what may have been during that time. Sometimes he takes this approach because of his own penchant for engaging the viewer’s fantasy for appreciating the cleverness that he undertook to create the piece. Regardless, one can spend an inordinate amount of time studying the work and discovering the many subtleties that are found in the background. Favorite Choice of Medium: Sid Campbell’s favorite medium is Giclée canvas museum quality prints. He works exclusively at this level because it provides a sense of permanency and emphasizes an aesthetic quality that is hard to duplicate of archival paper of mixed mediums. For him, always being one to visit art galleries and museums whenever he travels, finds an oneness with those greatest renaissance artists of the past that undoubtedly felt the same way. Campbell states, “I love canvas for its durability and the way that oil permeates the fabric and becomes one with the image that sets so vividly on the surface. Richly framed artwork is a thing of beauty that will be around for hundred, in not thousands of years given proper treatment. Besides, the richness, it attracts almost anyone that walks into a room displaying such distinctive treasure.”
