Sunrises and sunsets remind me of where I am in time and space. I mean this both literally and figuratively. Sunrise and sunset and the phases of the moon are the oldest and simplest markers of the passing of time. At sunrise and sunset I like to remember where I am in relation to my loved ones. In California, I frequently watch the sun disappear into the Pacific horizon as I send good wishes to my friends and family in Asia. When I look at the early morning sun, I am reminded of how my friends on the east coast have been up for several hours, taking in the same sun. For me, viewing the moon is a more subtle, private experience: I'm reminded of the very real connection between all living things and the heavenly bodies. I remember that moonlight is the light of the sun, reflected.
