Current Gallery: flora ( piece)
In this botanical series, my studies of nature explore the aesthetics found in the world all around us. My view extends no further than our own backyards where I focus in on natural patterns created by leaves, branches, fruit, and seeds. I spent 15 years of my life living in various obscure places around the world. After returning to the U.S. to settle down, I found myself putting aside my travel photos and focusing instead on subjects found close to home, exaggerating this closeness by zooming in on the subjects. I started this series after the birth of my first child, and I often wonder if I was drawn to the subject of fruits and seeds as a reflection of motherhood and reproduction itself. Most important to me, though, is that the subject provides a loose framework for playing with pattern and color. A process of doodling and experimenting happens after I rough-in the composition, resulting in many little surprises that appear throughout the canvas created by contrasts of clear and blurred areas, fresh and muddy color, thick and thin paint—little places to get lost in where unexpected things have happened.
